Lagavulin 16 yo

When looking at whiskies to taste in Teuchters, myself and Lucas were debating over the age. For our first tasting, we wanted to have some well matured malts. We had picked three whiskies (Glenfiddich 21, Macallan 18, Highland Park 18) and we were looking for our fourth and final treat.

Chris: Lagavulin 16? It’s a bit younger than the others, but it is absolute quality.

Lucas: Yeah you can never have enough of it.

Chris: Agreed.

Lucas: That was quick.

Part of Diageo’s Classic Malt collection, Lagavulin is an Islay single malt whisky from the south east coast, near Port Ellen. “Long Fermentation, long distillation and long maturation” (classic malts website) are attributed to the uniqueness of this single malt. And a lot of peat! Barreled in both American Bourbon casks and Spanish Sherry casks, bottled at 43% ABV. This is the most widely available Lagavulin.

So what do we think?

Chris:

Nose: It’s sometimes amazing what you find on the nose of a whisky. Aromas of a coal fire and a bonfire on a winter’s day. Also a hint of seaweed and a rich sweetness which is a preview to the richness within.

Palate: Smoky caramel. Rich, breathtaking on first taste. Slight oakiness and bitterness which adds bite.

Finish: Although there is smoke, there is also a sweet fruitiness you don’t expect. A nice long finish.

Overall: An excellent whisky.

Lucas:

Yeah man. It’s an amazing whisky. And, quite frankly, we both know it inside-out. In Teuchters I even said at one point that we probably shouldn’t even have bothered tasting it any more. But what a mistake would that have been!

I like your notes Chris. And I think I would struggle to come up with my own, I consider this whisky a complete package, an integrated masterpiece that does not need analysis or description. It needs more than that.

Every time I drink it, Laga tells me a story. In Teuchters it was a short essay about a leather jacket with a dozen pockets and just as many holes in it. A jacket that was passed from a father to a son. It’s not pretty, but it’s the best thing in the world to those who care. Open your nose, Lagavulin 16 has a story for you too!
