Bowmore on the beach (under the palm trees)

I cannot believe it took Lucas and I so long to taste these beautiful Bowmores (courtesy of Duncan Taylor). The samples sat in Lucas’ flat untouched, brimming with potential.  I don’t understand how we continually missed them. I mean, 27 years old Bowmore, what were we thinking?

Anyway, it was an opportune moment to taste them. We were both a bit down in the dumps for one reason or another, and these were the perfect remedy.

We were sent two samples. Both 27 years old, both Bowmore. So what’s going on? Well, one was drawn on the 6th of April 2009 and the other on the 13th of April 2009. One week, not much difference you would think and you would be quite right. The thing is, they were drawn from two different casks…

Bowmore 1982
Duncan Taylor
Date Drawn: 06/04/2009
Cask 85057
53.5 % ABV

Nose: It just hit us between the eyes. Sweet! Amazingly sweet. Blueberries, caramel, plums, fudge, bananas, mints, treacle, pears. Its truly unbelievable! It doesn’t smell like Bowmore, it doesn’t even smell like whisky!

Palate: Strawberries, lemons and a fruit smoothie.

Finish: Sweet and fizzy.

With water it shows more plums on the nose and a slight carrot cake taste.

Person: So who will it be?  Virginie Ledoyen in the Beach. Awesome.

Overall: We love Duncan Taylor and we love Bowmore. Especially when instead of the clouds of Islay they give us burning sun, golden sand, palm trees, potent piña coladas and body lotion… Both samples were surprising in a good way. Try and get your hands on cask 85057 if you can. It’s worth silly money if you ask us.

Comments

  1. You write “they were drawn from two different casks…” and still both are from “Cask 85066″. Can’t help feeling a touch confused. Could you explain this.

BTW, your approach to subject (whiskies) is refreshingly different compared to so many other bloggers.

  2. Well spotted! .The phrase ‘I am a muppet comes to mind’. It is 2 different casks. It will be edited forthwith.

    Thanks for the comment!
