Penderyn at the Scotch Malt

When these words were uttered to me by Olaf, in the top function room in the SMWS in Queen St, I nervously glanced out the window. Not because I dislike Penderyn, I actually really like Penderyn. Our Welsh cousins have made an innovative spirit using an unusual still and it works. The stuff I have tried has been tasty and the marketing is spot on. Lucas and I have a lot of time for them. I was nervously looking out the window to see if I could see an angry mob, burning effigies of Tom Jones. Signs saying ‘say no to the valley’s’ and people destroying Catherine Zeta Jones DVD’s (my imagination runs away with me at times). The Scotch Malt is quite a traditional place. I just didn’t know how the members would react.

Thankfully, as far as I can tell, the response has been positive. No angry mob (thank God!)After the SMWS started getting Japanese distiller’s casks, people got used to the idea of non Scottish distiller’s being showcased in the Society. As Olaf said: “if the liquid is good enough, we will bottle it”

While we were tasting, Lucas was tweeting our tasting. David from St George’s Distillery asked when the Scotch Malt would bottle English Whisky. Olaf smiled. I said “that would really put the cat amongst the pigeons!”. He stuck to his original line “if the liquid is good enough, we will bottle it”. Watch this space!

Anyway, on to the Penderyn.

Nose: Cream with cranberries and strawberries. Candy floss and Haribo. Blood oranges and Sangria. What a nose!

Palate: Wine gums, blueberries and creme de cassis. Haribo’s and cranberries again. Fruit pastels.

Okay so it is a little too sweet for my palate. I do have to love it for being completely different though. My palate hadn’t experienced such sweetness from a whisky for quite a while. A digestif or a magnificent cocktail spirit me thinks.
