A Quick Dram: Big Peat

I quite fancied a bottle of Big Peat for Christmas. Sometimes you just want to add a bottle to your cabinet. I asked Santa, but he had me marked as a wrong-un. Luckily when Santa gives you a lump of coal, Whisky companies step in and send you a sample. Woo!

Big Peat is a vatted malt (blended, pure, whatever we are supposed to say now) basically a mixture of Single Malts. Douglas Laing have taken some very interesting Islay Distilleries and mixed them together. Ardbeg, Bowmore, Caol Ila and Port Ellen. Port Ellen! Very difficult to get hold of, expensive and tasty. Will I be able to taste the Port Ellen in this blended malt? We will see.

Nose: As soon as I open the bottle, I am transported to the sea. Seaweed, coastal breeze, bonfire on the beach. Lemons, bitter olive brine and the tiniest hints of pear drops.

Palate: Medium smoke, heather and honey. Really sweet for a smokey Whisky. Bitterness, oaky, slightly fishy, seaweed, grapefruit. It’s pretty awesome actually.

Finish: A lingering smoke.

I’m not sure if I taste the Port Ellen. This Whisky is certainly quite sweet, but I think I would put that down to the Caol Ila as opposed to the Port Ellen. But the important question is, is it any good?

I think it is a superb wee dram. When you see Big Peat on the label, you half expect something offensively peaty like Supernova 2. It is not as violent a peat. For me it takes the sweet elements of some of the lighter Islay whiskies and adds a good kick of peat. Excellent blending from the folks at Douglas Laing.

Cheers

Chris
