Another great post from our knowledgeable and suave cigar writer, Lawrence Head.

The Homework

I always do my homework when it comes to cigars, and having been challenged by the masterful Chris Hoban to find a cigar which would complement the delicate 10 year old ‘Isle of Jura‘ I took to the books with fresh aplomb. Having done some preliminary exploration I discovered that the unanimous voice of whisky fans world-wide cried out a handful of common descriptions; vanilla, floral sweetness, honeyed. My own impressions of a decent sized dram was that it was almost too delicate and subtle, with an apple and sour cream tinge on the nose and spiced fruits on the palate…but only just.

The Cigar

Thus, the dictating cigars like Partagas Serie D no. 4 and the Bolivar Robusto were out of the question for a companionable and harmonious match up. What was needed was a cigar which would be happy to enhance the ever-so-subtle flavours of the Jura 10 and not overwhelm it in a cloud of fierce, crackling, Cuban spices. Surely the successful marriage between this malt and a cigar could only lie in the petit corona vitola.
Trinidad are renowned for absolutely the highest quality rolling and the very finest tobacco leaves, the Coloniales cigar would prove to be a highly appropriate accompaniment to the Isle of Jura. The Coloniales exudes a rich and creamy smoke, and to touch upon a moment of acrid harshness is simply unheard of. The light zesty dram sat beautifully next to this petit corona, as the deep vanilla flavours erupted from the first third and continued to intensify. The honeyed sweetness of the malt, despite being ever-so-soft, really helped to draw out the caramel tones through to the very end of the Coloniales.

The Logic

When looking to match a cigar and a light dram like this, based on this successful combination, I would advise a slimmer ring gauge and flavours which will complement and enhance the softer whisky, rather than choke and overwhelm it.
