A Quick Dram: AnCnoc 1997 Vintage

Ancnoc

Yes, I know this came out a while ago and the 1998 vintage was bottled in February this year and has already been reviewed by Graeme. Oh well. Sue me. I only recently stumbled across a small sample bottle of this and kicked back earlier in the week (before the sun was kidnapped from Edinburgh) to enjoy this summery dram.

Nose: Sweet toffee and fudge, balanced by a strong bitter wood note. Banana loaf and orange zest. Some gentle cinnamon and ginger spices are lurking. Everything is kept in check by creamy vanilla.

Palate: Initially quite rich with a touch of smoke. Surprisingly malty and biscuity. Bitterness (in a lovely refreshing way) appears again with wood bark. Not as delicate as I was expecting, still really well balanced.

Finish: Bittersweet (again, in a good way). Bitter wood competes with vanilla and butterscotch. Alarmingly drinkable.

Overall: A great AnCnoc, somewhat more ballsy than I was expecting and I thoroughly enjoyed it. For under £50 this is a great ‘session dram’. The sort of bottle were you throw away the cork and share this with friends on a lovely summer’s evening. All we need now is for the sun to return…
