Master of Malt 30yo Speyside (4th Edition)

MoM

The chaps at Master of Malt have a knack of picking superb whisky and bottling it themselves. This is no exception. Sourced from a ‘secret’ distillery somewhere in the heart of Speyside, this is the fourth edition of the 30yo Speyside from MoM and it pays homage to its early heritage. The second edition had a huge sherry influence whereas the third edition was a slightly lighter, tamer affair. This one, I’m assured, packs a mean sherry punch like its grandfather.

Nose: Toffee apples and a warm clove spice. Slightly nutty. Stewed fruits dusted with Madeira sugar. Full mouthfeel and a massive sherry richness. Not ‘sticky’ though, quite a clean spirit.

Palate: Very smooth – not as spicy as the nose suggests. Initially I get some sweet wood and those banana pick’n’mix sweets. Then there’s waves of honey, toffee and rich fruits.

Finish: Long and full. A host of fruits all at once; figs, currants, dates, prunes, I could go on…

Overall: Once again this is wonderful stuff from the chaps at Master of Malt. The spirit is not at all tired after spending 30 years in a cask and the woody/oaky notes are modest at best. The sherry influence shines through but allows the spirit to speak. Superb.
