Wemyss Malts Spring Release

Wemyss Malts

Wemyss Malts have been at it again, releasing a tantalising range of single cask whiskies for our enjoyment. This time we have a 15yo Auchentoshan from a bourbon barrel, a 12yo Bunnahabhain from a puncheon and a 25yo Glenrothes from a sherry butt. I’ve tasted quite a few of their previous releases and I’ve rarely been let down, so let’s hope their most recent offerings are also up to scratch.

Candied Fruit
Auchentoshan 1998/2013
294 bottles
46% ABV
£70.29 from here

Nose: Candyfloss, hay bales, apple chews, lemon bon bons, waxed paper and wood shavings.

Palate: Very light, sweet and smooth – vanilla cheesecake, caramel barrels, runny honey and a touch of spice; maybe cinnamon muffins.

Finish: Lingering vanilla sweetness.

Chocolate Honeycomb
Bunnahabhain 2001/2013
812 bottles
46% ABV
£58.29 from here

Nose: Salty caramel, pretzels and a hint of smoke sit along side dates, prunes and some milk chocolate. There’s also a slight herbal note there too.

Palate: Some dry woodsmoke and a chunk of chocolate to begin with before a big sherry influence hits – faint struck matches, smoked cheese, dried fruits and salty beef jerky.

Finish: A lovely wispy smokiness hangs about for a while.

Ginger Spice
Glenrothes 1988/2013
660 bottles
46% ABV
£114.51 from here

Nose: A delicate mix of lighter notes (vanilla, icing sugar and golden syrup) and heavier undertones (raspberry sauce, rum and raisin ice cream, dark chocolate and old oak staves).

Palate: Richly fruity with sweet sultana cake, cherries and chocolate covered raisins. There’s a nuttiness too – toasted almonds and hazelnuts. A very juicy palate and then the oak eventually emerges.

Finish: Sweet juiciness and a dash of cocoa.

Overall: Another three sterling single casks from Wemyss Malts. The Glenrothes is the stand out for me, a great mix of vibrant fruity notes along and other, richer notes to give great complexity. There are also very few places where you can get a 25yo single cask Glenrothes from!

Great work guys, looking forward to the next batch of single casks.
