Macallan Coronation Bottling (American Oak Edition)

Macallan Fancy Stuff

When I saw that Macallan had done a set of Coronation bottlings, I kind of got the feeling they had missed some other big news that could have been marked with a commemorative bottling. For example, a new Superman film has just been confirmed, with Batman as co-star. I mean, that’s big news! Surely that was just as deserving of a bottling as commemorating a coronation? It would be a very cool label.

Another question that came to mind; will Macallan take these bottlings full circle, and do a super limited edition “anti royal” bottling? Maybe with the blurb on the back saying something about supporting those that don’t agree with unelected heads of state? Wanting to present both sides of the story? I doubt it.

Anyway, enough of my political and comic book ramblings, let’s get on to the whisky. I was really impressed with the Coronation Sherry Edition, so now I’ll give the American Oak a taste:

Nose: Beeswax, oily, biscuity, malty, perfumed, apricot, orange oil. It’s complex, filled with lovely oaky notes, and refined.

A very classy dram on the nose.

Palate: Big mouth filling flavours of honey comb biscuit, vanilla, lemony notes and coconut.

It’s not the most complex, but does it have to be? It was very enjoyable, and probably what I would class as a session dram, if I could afford to session on such drams. The European Oak bottling is better, but this is still very good.

Two top notch drams. They make me wonder though. Why doesn’t Macallan release this at 40 quid a bottle, in an almost Abunadh style? Show off your cask strength cask samples. No need for age statements. Just make them stonking, in your face, and fully flavoured? Maybe in different batches? If it gave me an insight into the warehouses at Easter Elchies, and didn’t cost me an arm an a leg, I’d buy them.
