Hankey Bannister 40yo returns!

HB 40 Packaging

The last time we wrote about Hankey Bannister 40yo was two and a half years ago when Graeme had more hair and I had yet to write my first EWB article. Much has changed in that time… mainly Graeme’s hairline. Fast forward to the present day and Hankey Bannister have launched a new expression of their 40yo which is limited to 1480 bottles and will be gradually released over the next couple of years; 500 bottles have just hit the market with rest becoming available in 2014 and 2015. Graeme loved the ‘old’ 40yo, and this one, from appearance alone, looks very special. Each gilt-engraved, curvaceous decanter comes in a plush dark purple gift box containing a signed and numbered booklet certifying authenticity. The liquid promises to be pretty special too, with rare Highland malt whisky from ex-sherry butts and hoggies dating from 1967 and 1970 being used in this blend.

Nose: Vanilla slices, candied orange, baked apples with brown sugar and dark cherries to begin with. Then richer things like buttered gingerbread, cinnamon stick and a polished mahogany desk appear as this whisky really shows its age and complexity.

Palate: A dusting of white pepper to start, then moving to creamy vanilla, rich toffee, butterscotch and orange zest. This gives way to a rich fruitiness; prunes, chocolate coated raisins and sultana cake.

Finish: A lovely mix of chocolate, oak and woodspice.

Overall: A hugely complex and enjoyable dram, but then again I suppose it’d have to be considering the not-so-insignificant price tag. I know it’s limited edition and it looks very impressive, but for a fraction of the price you could pick up a bottle of Glenfarclas 40yo or Black Bull 40yo, both of which have flavour profiles not a million miles away from this one in my opinion. But hey, that’s just my opinion. I’m sure this will sell out pretty darn quickly and rightly so, a great dram for someone looking to add an eye-catching centrepiece to their whisky collection.
