The Glenlivet Guardians Chapter

Glenlivet Guardians Chapter

The Guardians of Glenlivet. An ancient order sworn to protect the legacy of Guardian General George Smith. Protecting the land and the stills from ruin since the signing of the Distillers License in 1824. Facing trials of sabotage, assassination and reputational ruin. They have now been asked to undertake their biggest challenge to date, the dawning of a new Chapter, the next step in the legacy, a new fate, a looming destiny, fulfillment of an ancient prophecy… too far? Well, basically they are choosing the next Glenlivet via a combination of tastings and social media – The Glenlivet Guardians Chapter.

Over the last few months, in dozens of countries around the world, tastings have been taking place to establish the next Glenlivet release. Three whiskies – The Classic, The Exotic and The Revival – have been vying for the love of Guardians in a bid to be released as The Glenlivet Guardians Chapter in February 2014. The release will be a limited run of 2000 9L cases and will originally be offered to the Guardians to buy before general release.

The Classic harks back to the original style of whisky that George Smith would have made back in ye’olden days, with a twist of the enterprising character that made the Glenlivet what it is today. A combination of ex-bourbon, sherry and virgin oak casks combine to make a smooth and sweet non chill-filtered expression at 48.7% ABV.

The Exotic is intended to show the Glenlivet’s appeal globally. The popularity of the whisky in the states is noted but the cask that is most predominantly noticeable in this expression is the ex-Oloroso sherry butts. Darker and spicier that the other Glenlivet Guardians Chapter challengers, also non chill-filtered and also bottled at 48.7% ABV. The Exotic is currently in the lead!

Finally we have The Revival. According to Mr Alan Winchester, the thought process behind this bad boy is the combination of old and new. Meant to represent the constant revival of Glenlivet when facing threats over the years. Again a mix of butts, barrels and hogs. This time with a big emphasis on first fill ex-bourbon American Oak casks. Light, fruity and (you guessed it!) non chill-filtered and bottled at 48.7% ABV.

The vote ends tomorrow and you can vote by becoming a guardian at www.theglenlivet.com/guardians. My tasting notes for the Glenlivet Guardians Chapter expressions are below and if you must know, I voted for The Classic (A tough choice over he Revival)… but each to their own and all that jazz!

The Glenlivet Guardians Chapter
The Classic
Non chill-filtered, 48.7% ABV

Nose: Predominantly vanilla fudge notes. Chewy toffee and young sharp citric notes as well.

Palate: Quite a kick to it! Still with the light, young citric notes and smooth caramel. Orange, creme brulee and raisins. Get’s a bit richer with time. Very simple but very good.

Finish: Light and dry, with a slight orange tint.

The Glenlivet Guardians Chapter
The Revival
Non chill-filtered, 48.7% ABV

Nose: Again, a nice gentle sweetness. Creme Eclair and vanilla. Quite fresh and vibrant as well; green apples, fresh strudel and a hint of warm raisins.

Palate: A little sharper than the Classic but not as hot. Bitter at first, with a floral, metallic note. Massively grows on me with time though. Rising to baked pear, red apple and winter spice.

Finish: Creamy, coconut milk and ginger.

The Glenlivet Guardians Chapter
The Exotic
Non chill-filtered, 48.7% ABV

Nose: A nice dry sherry influence, very Fino in character. Nutty, raisiny and a hint of hot caramel.

Palate: Dark chocolate and warm spices. Dark plum. Again with the nutty and dry notes. Maybe a bit too drying, and a tad salty.

Finish: Prunes and salted nuts.

Cheers,

Graeme

  2. Based on the descriptions, I’d be most interested in the classic (or maybe revival), but obviously there is only one way to know for sure :)
