Summerhall Edinburgh: It’s Awesome (Get tickets for the Scottish Juniper Festival)

RoyalDickBar

The criteria for a great bar, in my view, is good booze, good atmosphere, good food and attentive staff. If the staff are up for a laugh, and good chat, that is very important, but the drinks selection is really key for me. As someone who has worked in a few bars, supplied bars as a trade salesman, and spend my time researching every type of booze, I do really care what the house vodka, gin, and wines are. I really do want to drink in a bar with nice beer, and I really don’t want to drink in a bar with crap beer. I like to see a bar menu that makes sense, that has been well thought out, and maybe shows the personality of the people that run it. I like a bar that thinks about their Gin and Tonic, creates a perfect serve, and outside of their house range, has a good selection of spirits. It doesn’t have to be a huge range, but a well thought out, quality selection.

Simply; Summerhall, and the Royal Dick Bar within this venue, is one of my favourite places to drink right now. The bar is nice, the beer garden is great, the selection is really good, the staff are friendly, they run some great events (I went to a Coen brothers event there that was awesome) and the best bit; much of the booze is made on site.

Barney’s Beer & Pickerings Gin

Now, I am going to do an individual post on each of these soon, but just to say, they are both made on site. I can’t emphasise how good it feels to drinks a beer that is made a stones throw from where you’re sitting, and have a G & T in the next round, where the Gin is made on site. And they are both really tasty. Barney’s Volcano is a really nice IPA and Pickerings is a really easy drinking gin, particularly with Grapefruit.

Gin

Which brings me on to exciting happenings at Summerhall this weekend. Our good friends at Solid Liquids are hosting the Scottish Juniper Festival at Summerhall this Friday/Saturday (Fri 13th, Sat 14 of June) to celebrate World Gin Day. There are still some tickets. You should go. I will be. How can I sell it to you…hmmm, shed loads of gin. A great bar. Most likely cocktails. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable people. So, go and get tickets already! See you there.
