Remember remember, EWB does Movember…

If you bumped into myself, Chris or Turbo during November, you’ll have noticed that we were sporting some pretty spectacular facial furniture in the form of handlebar moustaches. This is because we at Edinburgh Whisky Blog take part in Movember every year. Unfamiliar with Movember? Well, Movember is a worldwide campaign, which raises vital funds to help combat the number one and two male-specific cancers: prostate and testicular cancer. Participants, known as Mo Bros, face Movember 1st clean shaven and grow moustaches over the following 30 days. Their aim is to raise money and start conversations around the often-ignored issue of men’s health.

Last year we held our first whisky and cocktail tasting in aid of Movember at Ruffians, a multi-award winning barber shop in the West End of Edinburgh. This year we held another tasting, and as you can see from some of the photos below, we had a ball. Martin and Alan from Solid Liquids created a bespoke whisky cocktail for the night, called ‘Hankey Hickory’, which used Hankey Bannister Heritage Blend as the base. The full cocktail recipe is below:

2 parts Hankey banister Heritage Blend
1 part Palomino sherry
0.5 parts cloudy apple juice
0.5 parts Magic Cherry Syrups (cherries macerated in Aberlour a’bunadh and spices)
1 dash Orchard Bitters
The cocktail was then smoked with hickory wood chips and served in a chilled champagne coupe

Following a cocktail (or three…) Mr Hoban and I kicked off the 4 dram tasting which consisted of a 12yo hand-fill Balblair single cask, an 18yo hand-fill Glenlivet single cask, a 22yo single cask Rosebank and a 4yo single cask Kilchoman. Pretty tasty stuff! Thanks to Ruffians for hosting us again, Solid Liquids for creating a wonderful cocktail, Uisge Source for donating several bottles of their various products, and everyone who braved the cold and the rain to come along and support our Movember effort this year. We raised a fantastic amount for Movember and had a great night in the process.

Same time, same place, next year?

Tiger

  1. Great night guys, hugely entertaining and some spiffing whiskies served and all for a grand cause, hats off to you, well done, etc., etc., same time next year you say? :-D

  2. Cheers Barry, glad you enjoyed the evening… and I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t have a similar shindig next year too!
