Springbank 12yo Burgundy Cask

Springbank Distillery

You’ll be hard pushed to find a more traditional distillery than Springbank. Family owned and with 100% of production carried out on site, Springbank has gathered a cult following of sorts over the years. In the same love-it-or-hate-it bracket as most Islay whiskies, the distinct industrial oily smoke is lapped up by some but despised by others. I sit firmly in the former category and I am thoroughly looking forward to tasting the new Burgundy Cask 12yo. Sadly, this is sold out in most retailers and so is probably only going to be found at auction, therefore big thanks go to Chuck from Scotch at The Balmoral for cracking open his bottle and gifting me a sample.

Springbank 12yo Burgundy Cask
53.5% ABV
RRP £60-ish
Probably only available at auction

Nose: A syrupy sweetness sits on the top, with red currants, blackcurrant cordial, dark forest fruits, cherries and plums. Then there’s soft smoke, underpinned by an earthy pepperiness, and some charred steak and cask stave.

Palate: Chilli spice to begin, followed by red berries, liquorice, treacle toffee, plums and fig jam. Then comes the trademark oiliness, with tannic notes, barbequed meat, bark and a touch of rubber.

Finish: Lingering peat smoke, and drying cask char.

Overall: This is a fantastic example of red wine matured whisky. The trademark Springbanky oiliness and industrial smokiness are there but sit in fantastic harmony with the rich, sweet notes for the burgundy cask. Only one thing for it; to the auction sites…
