Collectivum XXVIII – Diageo Special Releases 2017

Collectivum XXVIII Feature

A blended malt? In the Special Releases? What?!

It’s true. This is the first time something other than a single malt or single grain whisky has made an appearance in the Special Releases. Containing whisky from all 28 of Diageo’s active malt distilleries, this a first for the collection. Commenting on this year’s Special Releases, and the Collectivum XXVIII in particular, Dr Nick Morgan, Diageo’s Head of Whisky Outreach, said: “The Special Releases range is always a highlight in our calendar year, it reflects the truly extraordinary range of stocks our blenders have available to them. The variety and quality of whiskies in the collection is simply impeccable. We’re looking forward to sharing this year’s collection with the world and in particular keen to see the response to the new Collectivum XXVIII.” Here we go…

Blended Malt
Diageo Special Releases 2017
57.3% ABV
£150 here

Nose: Big initial spiciness, with cinnamon, nutmeg and zesty ginger. Then there’s waxy apples, chestnuts, some floral notes (think fresh laundry), pink wafers and freshly chopped wood.

Palate: Warming spices again, some aniseed, caramel barrels, sultana cake, spicy chutney, cinnamon swirls chocolate and little lick of smoke.

Finish: Clove, cinnamon, and nutty, dry oak.

Overall: The wood influence here is quite profound – all those spices and not too much in the way of fruit. It’s a good blended malt, don’t get me wrong, and there’s a lot of flavour there. It’s just that the flavour is all in the same ball park. And £150 a bottle? Not for me I’m afraid. Nevertheless, the journey continues tomorrow as we head to the Northern Highlands and to a distillery which is celebrating its 200th birthday this year; Teaninich. See you there.
