Highland Park The Light 17yo

Highland Park The Light Header

Highland Park launched The Light a little while back, completing their two-part series which began with, you guessed it, The Dark. With the first expression being matured entirely in European Oak ex-sherry casks, this one has been matured exclusively in American Oak casks for 17 years.

Nose: Some herbal notes to begin; green cardamom seeds, menthol cigarettes, camphor and dried leaves. Then some fermented citrus fruits along with a slightly slate-y minerality and some smoked seafood cleanliness; seared scallops and BBQ’d prawns. A touch of cedar wood and the slightest bit of damp clay add some weight.

Palate: White pepper, lemon sherbet, salt and brine get this one off to quite a sharp start. Then there’s some tropical fruit in the way of mango, papaya, lychee and charred pineapple with a little white chocolate. Just a faintest whiff of aromatic smoke. Maybe even singed paprika or pine.

Finish: The smoke is just about there, along with clean citrus notes and some nutty, spicy wood.

Overall: Very enjoyable, if not a little nippy at 52.9% ABV, particularly on the palate. It’s a very good whisky, but the asking price is quite remarkable for a 17yo whisky, even if you do get a nice wooden box thrown into the mix. Although if you see it in a bar for £12-£15a dram, it’s certainly worth a punt.
