Our Newest Boutique-y Whisky: Glen Keith Batch 5

Glen Keith Batch 5 TBWC Label Header

Time really does pass quicker the older you get. I know that statement completely ignores all the laws of space, time, and well, general common sense, but I cannot believe it’s been five years since a few of us at the blog went on a massive piss up blog networking evening with the fine folks at Master of Malt which resulted in us securing an EWB Boutique-y bottling. Since then, all four batches of our That Boutique-y Whisky Company Glen Keith have sold out, despite having all our faces smack bang on the front of the label.

As I’ve said before, we primarily chose Glen Keith for it’s highly experimental nature: peating the water instead of the barley to make smoky spirit, investigating the effect of different yeast strains, producing spirit from a wheat-based mash bill, and, until the 1980s, alternating between triple and double distillation. Even today, it is still home to the Chivas Bros Lab.

Owners Chivas Bros have given the distillery some much needed TLC in recent times, with it restarting production in 2013 having been closed for a number of years. With our first four batches now a distant memory, TBWC have released a fifth batch of Glen Keith; aged for 24 years, bottled at a cask strength of 49.1%, and limited to 337 bottles.

Nose: Full on fruit salad! Candied pineapple, green apple skins, yogurt coated banana flakes, dried apricots, custard creams, vanilla panna cotta, pear juice and some fresh wood shavings.

Palate: Lemon drizzle cake, dried flowers, lime peel, white grapes, pink lemonade, and lychee. Then a little root ginger, white pepper, malt biscuits and gentle oak.

Finish: Coconut creams with gentle, light woodspice and some drying oak.

Overall: Yet another great Glen Keith release from That Boutique-y Whisky Company (and I’m not just saying that because our faces are on the bottle). Lots of juicy, fruity notes balanced by a little ginger and pepper with subtle, yet firm, oak. Our first four batches sold out within a few months of release, and I expect this will do the same. Delish.
