After releasing a second expression in their Global Travel Retail series, Glendronach have now added a second expression to their Limited Release collection, following on from the Glendronach Master Vintage 1993 25yo. The Port Wood is, you’ve guessed it, finished in port casks form the Duoro Valley in Portugal after initially being matured in Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.

Commenting on the release, Glendronach’s Master Blender Dr Rachel Barrie said: “The Glendronach means ‘valley of the brambles’ in old Scots Gaelic. We are delighted to celebrate this heritage with a Portuguese twist on our revered Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry cask maturation, which uses the finest Spanish oak. This extra maturation in Port casks imparts a deep cherry wood colour and enriches the layers of fruit in The Glendronach.”

Here we go.

Glendronach Port Wood
10 years old

£56.95 here

Nose: Sticky, syrupy sweetness – blackcurrant cordial, red currants, quince jelly, spiced malt loaf, and cinnamon.

Palate: Really juicy entry – blackberries, toffee apples, mandarins, and raspberry jus. Then a peppercorn spice with bourbon biscuits and black tea.

Finish: Chewy oak, some clove and raisins.

Overall: Perhaps a bit on the simple side, and not quite as integrated as I’d hoped for, but still really quite enjoyable. It’s a sessionable whisky; nice and fruity and rather moreish, but the price point is a little on the high side for me. It’s one of those whiskies which fits into the category of: TFI Friday – let’s pour two fingers into a rocks glass and have a dram while I watch TV and chill out. Easy, and pleasant enough to ensure a bottle won’t last too long.
