I’m not quite sure how I managed to forget about this, but I also managed to sneak a sample of the new Old Pulteney 25yo away from the Inverhouse stand at Whisky Fringe last month. My focus was getting my hands on the two new AnCnoc releases, the Cask Strength 16yo and Peat (which you can read about here), but Betty being the absolute legend that she is, she also filled up a wee miniature with Old Pulteney 25yo for me to take home and enjoy too.

This whisky was only rolled out in June, following the relaunch of the rest of the core range last year. In fact, it’s almost a year to the day since I reviewed Huddart, the 15yo, and the 18yo, and you can see what I thought of these new expressions here. The 25yo is initially matured in American Oak casks before being given a short finish in European Oak. If the ‘old’ 25yo, released in 2017, is anything to go by, I should be in for a right treat here.

Nose: Sandalwood, waxed cricket bat, old library, polished oak, and some dark chocolate. Underneath there’s also a bit of apple pie, orange blossom, manuka honey, salted caramel and toasted vanilla pods.

Palate: Leather bound books, parchment, boot polish, and antique furniture. A rich fruitiness too – baked apples, fruit loaf, and juicy sultanas. Then cacao nibs, cinnamon stick, and some cask stave. Layered and complex, very enticing.

Finish: Exotic wood, orange oils, and baking spices.

Overall: Absolutely gorgeous stuff – it has all the depth and maturity you’d expect from a whisky of this age. The nose is perhaps a little on the shy side, but it shines on the palate. I do wonder about the price though – the recommended retail price is bang on £100 more than the 25yo which was released in 2017. I know prices have increased a fair bit in the last couple of years, but that’s a huge jump. Nigh on four hundred quid for a 25 year old steep, even if it is delicious.
