Mackmyra Vintersol

Swedish distillery Mackmyra have collaborated with port brand, Quinta Do Valado, one of the oldest producers in the Duoro Valley in Portugal, to create Mackmyra Vintersol. This expression, which translates as ‘winter sun’, is initially matured in a combination of bourbon barrels, Swedish oak casks and oloroso sherry casks before being finished in Port casks. Given the current weather in Edinburgh this past week, I could do with a bit of winter sun right now.

Nose: A real creamy oakiness, with vanilla custard, peaches in syrup, and Angel Delight. Clean too – lemon sherbet, apple core, pear skins and a touch of fresh ginger.

Palate: Syruppy and fruity to begin – tinned fruit salad, some sherry trifle, stewed apple and rhubarb, and apricots and cream. Then some cinnamon spice and firm oak.

Finish: Oaky spices, plums, and blood orange.

Overall: Pretty darn good. I like that the port finish hasn’t completely dominated the liquid, and has allowed some of the cleaner, greener notes to shine through. It gives the whisky a nice balance when combined with the lingering oaky spices which comes through, especially on the palate. A really solid dram.
