Old Pulteney 2006 Single Cask #1448

Old Pulteney header article

To celebrate the birthday of The Whisky Shop’s W Club this autumn, they’ve released a 2006 single cask Old Pulteney. That’s a pretty handy birthday present by anyone’s standards. There’s been a few of these mid-noughties single casks floating about over the last 12 months. You’ll likely be familiar with the 2006 official bottling in global travel retail, and I’ve had the pleasure of using Tyndrum Whisky’s (formerly the Green Welly Stop whisky shop) 2004 vintage in a couple of tastings, which they released late last year.

If either of those whiskies are to go by, this should be rather tasty. Pulteney for me works really well in bourbon casks – it tends to compliment the weighty spirit, enhance the coastal elements, and allow a lot of citrus notes to shine. Here goes.

Old Pulteney 2006
Cask #1448
The Whisky Shop Exclusive
276 bottles
51.4% ABV
£99 here

Nose: Some pine, balsa wood, and window putty to begin with, but they soon blow off. Then there’s Granny Smith apples, grape skins, lime peel, root ginger, and sawdust. All very clean, before some yoghurt coated banana chips, white mice, custard creams and peaches in syrup come through.

Palate: A wasabi nip, with salted caramel, white chocolate, and vanilla Angel Delight. Some unripe pear and nectarine, then some peach cobbler and apricot emerge. Fresh chopped logs give a firm woodiness.

Finish: That drying oakiness builds, along with lemon and a zingy spice.

Overall: A well-selected single cask, if not a little on the young and spicy side, especially on the palate with those wasabi and unripe fruit notes. However, it opens up quite nicely with some water, becoming a bit more oily and juicy, with more of those fleshy orchard fruits making themselves heard. £99 for a 13-ish year old single cask whisky is pretty pricey though, but I guess that’s how much these things cost nowadays. Either way, it’s a very enjoyable dram, and it’s a bottle which will last all the longer by lengthening your dram with a dash of water. Then again, given how delicious this whisky is when reduced, maybe not.
