Yeah, yeah, very funny. In all seriousness though, what is this second batch of triple cask matured whisky from Benriach which has been bottled at cask strength? Let’s break it down.

Triple cask matured: matured in three types of cask. D’uh. These are bourbon barrels, oloroso sherry casks and virgin oak hogsheads.

Cask strength: no monkeying around here. This whisky is bottled at its natural strength of 60.6%. Oft.

Batch 2: Follows on from Batch 1, obviously, which was released in 2016. See what I thought of that whisky here.

Benriach Distillery Master Blender, Rachel Barrie, said of the release: “Cask Strength Batch 2 is Benriach in its most unadulterated state. At cask strength 60.6%, the drinker can taste straight from the vat, without chill-filtration, water or colour addition. Richly matured bourbon, oloroso and virgin oak casks take the drinker on an adventure through the Benriach Speyside warehouses. At cask strength, the drinker can explore every layer of flavour, and choose whether or not to add water to taste. Benriach Cask Strength Batch 2 is for those who want to experiment with whisky taste and explore for themselves.”

Here’s my take.

Nose: White pepper spiciness to begin. Then there’s fresh ginger, coconut, blood orange, grapefruit, fresh hay, lemon meringue, cooked apples with cinnamon, and some dry oak. Very bright – jumps right out the glass.

Palate: Again a peppery, almost wasabi-esque, nip to start, but this moves swiftly on to custard creams, pink wafers, apple and pear skins, toasted coconut and almonds, lemon zest and yoghurt-coated banana. There’s some dry oak and pine wood towards the end.

Finish: Lots of fresh new oak with nutmeg and ginger spices, and a touch of white chocolate.

Overall: Very, very good stuff. Once you get past the initial spice (it is 60.6% ABV after all) there’s loads of fresh, sweet, zingy notes on both the nose and the palate making for a very enjoyable dram. I added water to this to take it down to approximately 40% ABV and even more of these confectionery/baking notes appeared with some floral and even perfumed notes. It became a real easy sipper. I didn’t get too much of the sherry cask influence, but that doesn’t detract from the overall whisky whatsoever. A very tasty dram indeed, and at this ABV, your ~£58 goes a long way.
