Ballantine’s have added a new expression to their core range – a seven year old blended whisky finished in bourbon barrels. The rather odd age statement takes its inspiration from Ballantine’s founder, George Ballantine, who sold his own seven year old whisky during the 1870s. As a company, Ballantine’s was also one of the first to import bourbon barrels into Scotland from the USA.
Ballantine’s 7yo Bourbon Finish ties these two together, with Master Blender, Sandy Hyslop, saying: “With Ballantine’s 7 Bourbon Finish we wanted to clash global whisky cultures to create a delicious Scotch whisky with a distinctively American attitude. The seven-year aging combined with our bespoke bourbon barrel finishing process brings extra layers of richness, creaminess and caramel sweetness to the blend, making it ideal for Scotch lovers who want to dabble in bourbon and for bourbon fans wanting to break into Scotch.”

Nose: Loads of vanilla as expected, along with lemon creams, toasted coconut, white candysticks, pineapple humps, and some fresh sawdust and white pepper spice.
Palate: Very soft, with apple skin, toffee popcorn, runny caramel, yoghurt coated banana flakes, and some freshly sawn oak.
Finish: Quite short, with candied ginger, vanilla icing, and sweet oak.
Overall: A very pleasant whisky, a good looking bottle, and great value at under £28. The recommended serve is in an Old Fashioned (in place of bourbon whiskey) but this makes for a very refreshing highball, and for me it’s a bit more suited to that cocktail given the whisky is bottled down at 40% ABV. Very much a session dram or one for mixing – top stuff.
